VCA Art 2023

Samantha Thompson

In my practice, I combine textiles, crafting techniques and materials, printmaking, performance, and sculpture to provoke the therapeutic and aesthetic value of play and playfulness to adults.

In a society where adult responsibilities often take precedence, play within the context of contemporary art not only fosters creativity but also nurtures our innate sense of wonder.

How do we bring back play just for the sake of it? Using costumes, movement, colour, and texture, I create vibrant spaces where adults are invited to return to a childlike play space. Dressed up and concealed in bright clothing that mimics creatures or characters from a natural or fantasy world, people sway and move and are free for a while. Being playful is a choice, a mindset and way to approach life.
