Rose Weldon

My work delves into the connection and sense of community that is mirrored in traditional wood joining techniques. I have researched, practised and been taught these techniques, which have a rich history of craftsmanship, teaching, learning, and communal practice. I find that the act of physically joining two objects together symbolizes compromise and strength. Joinery has become a craft I deeply appreciate, as it embodies honesty and values knowledge.

Initially, my interest was sparked by traditional church pews, especially those made by separatist-communities, as well as Shaker furniture. The way groups such as the Shakers view the creation and ownership of their furniture as a collective effort, valuing the practice and historical significance of craft rather than focusing on individual craftsmanship intrigues me, and reflects my overall interest in the loss of craft. My work has always explored the dynamic of form>function/function>form, and in this piece, I invite public interaction in an effort to cultivate a stronger appreciation for the function of the work and consider how the form somewhat succeeds that.
