Millicent Stockfeld
My practice is an introspective and biographical investigation of lineages — grandmother, mother, myself — of underrepresented creative output and determines where I choose to place value. Coming from a background of being surrounded by ren faire painting created by my mother and grandmother, I seek to celebrate, elevate, and retain these homely and nostalgic aesthetics. Whilst I predominantly explore my family lineage and its influences on me, as a queer artist, I also seek to explore the historical lineage of creativity in the LGBQIA+ community.
Archival practice, or, the practice of ‘looking back’, is at the core of what interests me. Archives, particularly through a queer lens, are sites of knowledge preservation, but also a preservation of an artists’ interpersonal relationships. My practice archives things that inspire me on a socio-political level, and also personal experiences. I am Interested in how ‘looking back’ reclaims power for subjects that are disregarded by the societal majority as a result of constructed cultural biases and broader institutional powers that oppress.
