Lili Ward
My practice exists in the realm of vivid fever dreams, piling dry pastel on to canvas in high key hues. I am drawn to the pulsing energy of colour to explore universal and personal relationships between shame, religion, and sex.
I create temperate and vibrating scenes of porcelain characters in exaggerated natural backgrounds, and distorted symbols of religion with figures in glowing environments. I uncover bizarre source imagery hidden in the small corners of the internet, layering my material just as I do my subjects and ideas, building up a visual language comprising of the endless stream of imagery that saturates our lives.
I seek to create a bejewelled shrine to dissolve the boundaries between real life and the internet, where sacred and profane might mingle. Where the divinity of the image is rendered in a velvety medium.
