Lewis Egan
My practise finds its’ roots in analog self-portraiture photography. I tend to describe my photographs as images I’ve ‘made’. I’m an image-maker. I’m moved by work that is transparent in its construction, arrangement, process. However, growing tired of the static flatness of photography, I’ve sort after a greater sense liveness and arrived at video and performance.
Via my most recent video work, 'Untitled Character Videos', I’ve become obsessed with fame, advertising and celebrity personas – the inaccessibility of it all, the theatre of it, the display of living so effortlessly, smoothly, unchallenged.
As stated by my Untitled Character:
“My fans keep asking me, ‘but Mademoiselle, what is your name!?’ I must confess – I am nameless. I am Coco. I am Chanel. I am Tiffany. I am both Paspaley and Pearl. I am your Priceline Woman; the face of advertising; the voice of every moisturiser; a blend of only the finest natural ingredients. Some say I rejuvenate. Others say I replenish. Rumour has it I contain artificial fragrances! We shan’t dwell. Will I see you at the show? Bye for now!”
