Laura Smith

The Living Room is a manifesto on dreaming speculative narratives and rituals through cultural memory and imagination. Our cultural ecologies are a mashup, a web of richly entangled and interdependent unfolding stories.

My work seeks to reveal the dominant oppressive structures, research untold counter-histories, and to speculate on alternative futures. My practice is underpinned by queer and feminist theories and decolonising and emergent strategies.

Drawing on a large body of practice-led research – from processing intergenerational trauma to my relationship with a diasporic plant I came to know through the cracks in my neighbourhood – my work is a personal journey of unlearning and relearning.

The Living Room is a site of meditation and ritual. It aims to transport the viewer through the embodied references of handmade objects and the circular narratives of interwoven systems they exist within – from the cellular to the cosmic – to contemplate what it is to be human in a post-human time.
