Jessie Spencer Smith
My current work uses motifs of ornamentation and amusement as a spring point for exploring sentiment and nostalgia. Influenced by my own move from America seven years ago, my practice acts as an avenue for navigating the emotional landscape of estrangement. A perpetual curve runs throughout every painting; a subtle visual reference to the arabesque often used in decorative design, but more prominently as a psychological allusion to the rolling forward of time and the winding nature of the saccharine.
