Edward de Souza
Brisbane-born artist Edward de Souza explores the anxiety of individuals being powerless against the exponential growth of cities. Architecture often dominates by prioritising profitability over liveability. His works resist this de-humanisation.
While the work can be visually captivating, it unsettles and exposes the sometimes-sinister nature underpinning urban architecture. He extracts materials and concepts from architectural practice to evoke familiarity with cityscapes, urban infrastructure, and skyscrapers. Manipulating construction materials (concrete, glass, and steel) and unlocking the creative potential of 3D printing and laser cutting technologies, his work expands in scope through repetition, adaptability, weight, light, and spatiality.
