Devlin McCarthy

Throughout life, the eye is harassed and bombarded with millions of different forms of imagery per day, therefore my practise of photography has taken a turn in order to discover if the modern eye is really paying attention. I find myself moving through editorial depictions, physical manipulations and the use of ski masks to disrupt the purpose of the modern lens. Hiding the face of the subject questions the necessity of a smile within a photograph and further removes the need to identify the subject, narrowing the audience's gaze to focus on the scene presented. Using colour and texture my art builds an environment that contrasts the experiences and understandings of the activities taking place within my work. Using the outlets that manipulate the way we see as stark contrast; I refocus the viewers’ attention through materials that have been lost in the monotonous flow of life in order to repossess and take control of the modern attention span.
