Amanda Freestone
As an artist, I situate myself in the liminal space between craft and art. My practice spans a range of mediums, whereby slow, repetitive processes are a shared feature of many of my pieces, irrespective of their materiality. I favour a tactile art practice that encourages quiet, meditative introspection and an escape from the demands of everyday life. Professionally, I am a teacher and a social worker, and have spent the better part of the last decade working within the youth justice system. This has significantly impacted my art practice, with themes of mental health and the human condition underpinning much of my work.
Additionally, my art practice serves a dual purpose. Firstly, as a therapeutic process of self-care and meaning making, and secondly, as a tool to communicate my experiences, state of being, and engagement with the world around me. I view my art as an ongoing narrational practice of self-reflection and invite others to search for their own stories and reflections within.
